Tiger Woods Golf great, Tiger Woods, is another example of what the benefits of chiropractic care can offer an athlete. Tiger Woods states, "lifting weights and seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis has made me a better golfer. I've been going to Chiropractors for as long as I can remember. It's as important to my training as practicing my swing.” "Being a chiropractic patient has really helped me a lot," Tiger asserted . "When I was in a growth spurt, my back became very sore and I was weak. My chiropractor really helped me. Not only did he adjust my spine, he also gave me strengthening exercises to do. If you are tall and gangly, like I am, or play sports, I would recommend chiropractic."
"I had a bike crash that left me with a hip pointer and swelling in my left knee.. As my keen and hip injuries seemed to gradually worsen while I was using the Ice-Compression-Elevation-Rest routine. I could barely walk and had to use my arms to bend my knee so I could stand up from a sitting position. Dr. Banas did some sports therapy techniques that really made a huge difference and took the injury from slowly worsening to a speedy recovery" Andy C.
Lance Armstrong, 6-time Tour de France winner
One of the methods he uses to keep in peak performance is chiropractic care. According to Dr. Spencer, “My job with Lance and the team is to optimize the neuromusculoskeletal component of their training and, in the event of a crash, minimize down time and get them back in the race as quickly as possible. I adjust them as needed and guide them in choices of diet and supplements, which helps reduce the likelihood of injury.”
Dan O’Brien, US Olympic Team Gold Medalist in the Decathalon
Dan O'Brien said in the August 1996 issue of USA Today, "you obviously can't compete at your fullest if you're not in alignment. It was the holistic idea that I liked about Chiropractic. I really think Chiropractic is essential in running. If I could put a percentage on it, I think I compete eight to ten percent better from regular Chiropractic use, if not more. It is essential for me and my training routine," declared O'Brien.
On a separate occasion he also stated, "You obviously can't compete at your fullest if you're not in alignment. And your body can't heal if your back is not in alignment. It was the holistic idea that I liked about chiropractic and that is what track and field is about. Every track and field athlete that I have ever met has seen a chiropractor at one time or another. In track and field, it is absolutely essential. Chiropractic care is one of the things I think that no one has denied or refuted."
Dan even went as far as to say, "If it were not for Chiropractic, I would not have won the gold medal."
Joe Montana, Hall of Fame Quarterback and 4-time Super Bowl Champ
One of the most recognizable celebrity/athletes, holder of four Superbowl rings, three Superbowl MVP's and Player of the Year in 1990 has just agreed to become the spoke person for Chiropractic in the State of California. " Chiropractic care works for me.” states Joe, "I've been seeing a chiropractor and he's really been helping me out a lot. Chiropractic's been a big part of my game." Joe Montana and 35 of his teammates received chiropractic care right before the 1990 Super Bowl Game. Evander Holyfield, Former Heavyweight Champion
Evander stated in the December 1998 issue, " I do believe in Chiropractic. I found that going to a Chiropractor three times a week helps my performance. Once I drove 20 miles to see a Chiropractor before a fight. I have to have my adjustment before I get in the ring. The majority of boxers go to get that edge." Arnold Schwarzenegger, Big Chiropractic Booster
A strong supporter of chiropractic and a chiropractic patient himself for many years, "Arnold" told the group of chiropractors: "I depend on chiropractic and so does my whole family. . I have been making a movie in Mexico and all of us on the set saw the chiropractor to keep us going. All of the crew, electricians, stunt people, actors, all of us, were adjusted regularly by this great woman chiropractor who worked around the clock to take care of us all. That's what chiropractors do, take care of people like no other kind of healer." Each year at the "Arnold Classic", a bodybuilding and fitness event, athletes from all over the world get together to celebrate health and fitness. Many of the top competitors from these events follow Arnold’s lead by being regular chiropractic patients. Schwarzenegger, a chiropractic patient himself for years, summed his feelings for chiropractic up by saying, "It is truly one of the few professions that really helps people in a straightforward way with no monkey business, like some of the other professions promise to help, but this chiropractic is the real thing." Arnold also states, "I am very fortunate to have, so-to-speak, my in-house chiropractor, Dr. Franco Colombu, as my own personal chiropractor. So, I visit Franco regularly, and he comes over to my house. He adjusts my wife, my kids, me, everybody gets an adjustment. And we feel always great when Franco leaves. Even when I have athletic injuries he's always there for me, and helps me. So it's really terrific, and I know that first hand. That's why I always will be traveling around, all over the world, talking highly about the profession of chiropractic. You chiropractic doctors are really miracle workers, and that's why it's really great to have you here, part of the Arnold Classic. Because, like I said, the Arnold Classic and Fitness Weekend are about health and about fitness and preventive care." "Bodybuilders and fitness people have been using chiropractic very extensively in order to stay healthy and fit. I found it was better to go to a chiropractor before you get injured. We are a perfect team- the world of fitness and the world of chiropractors."
Wade Boggs, MLB Hall of Fame 3rd Baseman
"Last year I found Dr. Newman (chiropractor), and I have been seeing him ever since. I have been pain-free and feeling terrific. I swear by it. Now, it is just maintenance and keeping in line so the nerves don't touch." Emmitt Smith (As a Dallas Cowboy)
The main reason Emmitt still functions as well as he does is chiropractic care, Emmitt was introduced to chiropractic care by former Cowboys fullback Daryl Johnson and the two began a routine of chiropractic treatments – sometimes up to two or three per week – that continues to this day. During the season, he spends about two hours with a chiropractor every Friday afternoon. Depending on how he feels, Emmitt may be treated by his chiropractor two or three days a week; in some instances, his chiropractor flies with the team to provide care up until the start of the game. Emmitt states, " I go see the chiropractor when I get bent out of shape on Sundays. Playing in a football game is like being in 30-40 car accidents." Emmitt is one of a growing number of Cowboys who turn to chiropractor’s for treatment. Currently, wide receiver Raghib “Rocket” Ishmial; safety Darren Woodson; quarterback Quincy Carter; defensive end Greg Ellis; and offensive lineman Larry Allen all see chiropractors on a regular basis. Ismail is such a believer in chiropractic that before the start of the 2002 season, he sent the entire group of Cowboys wide receivers to his chiropractor for adjustments, blood workups and nutritional analysis, and paid for the entire session out-of-pocket. When Emmitt was asked if he ever gets used to the pain and abuse his body takes each season and how he gets past that each year, he replied, “ I think I take enough. I spend enough time trying to take care of my body and trying to remove some of the stress that the game itself puts on the body. I do that through massages, through chiropractic -- a particular chiropractor that I see in Dallas and I try to eat properly and rest.” “ Some of it may seem hokey to some people,” Emmitt said, referring to chiropractic. “ But if you traveled where I’ve traveled, done what I’ve done and seen the results that I’ve been getting, then you’d understand where I’m coming from.” In the October 16, 1998 issue of the USA Today, was an article that featured Emmitt. Emmitt is still one of the best players in the game. The article discusses his healthy lifestyle that includes regular chiropractic care. " I started doing this(chiropractic) about four or five years ago," Smith said. "I believe that what I’m doing is what helps me go on. I think Warren Moon, (Seattle’s 41 year old quarter back) does the same thing. So I’ve become a big believer in servicing my body and making sure it is lined up properly and functioning the way it is supposed to on Sunday." Smith joins an ever-growing list of professional athletes who regularly receive chiropractic adjustments. In June during the NBA basketball finals star players Scotty Pippin, and John Stockton were among those who received chiropractic care during breaks in the sixth and final game of the championship series. When LaDainian Tomlinson was still in college he called to ask Smith about his longevity, how he'd rushed for 1,000 yards for 10 straight seasons. What was Smith's advice? Messages on Monday and Friday said ''find a good chiropractor.'' Derek Parra , Olympic Speed Skater Derek is also a huge fan of chiropractic care. "I've always believed in chiropractic care. I've used a lot of other treatments for injuries and pain, but the problem doesn't get fixed until I go to a doctor of chiropractic," Derek explained. Derek is also an "endorsed" (spokesperson) athlete of the American Chiropractic Association. Derek joins the large and growing list of Olympic and professional athletes who regularly depend on chiropractic care. Chiropractic care not only helps them in recovering from injuries, but because chiropractic removes interference from the nervous system, (subluxations) it allows the athletes to compete at a higher level. And at the Olympic or professional level, any extra advantage or edge in performance can make all the difference in the world. Barry Bonds Three-time winner of the National League's Most Valuable Player, Barry Bonds, is another avid proponent of chiropractic care. He has been under chiropractic care since 1993. " Your body is being treated like it is supposed to be with chiropractic care", stated Bonds. He recommends that every athlete should have some contact with a chiropractor. Barry has even requested that a chiropractor be available to him in every city on the team's schedule! He has helped carry the chiropractic torch by graciously allowing our profession to publicly announce his feelings about chiropractic in the media. Over six years ago Barry fell down a flight of steps during spring training, the head athletic trainer at the time, called Barry’s chiropractor to assess his condition before he received an MRI later that day. When he arrived, Barry was in severe pain. He had pain radiating into his hip and groin. He was significantly limited in lumbar range of motion. When he checked him, his leg length was off by an inch; his pelvis was severely rotated; and his SI joint was locked. After getting the green light from the head athletic trainer, he simply did what any of us would have done: he balanced him out. Barry got off of the table, bent left and right, forward and back and said, " The pain is totally gone!" Needless to say, everybody standing around watching, including the chiropractor, breathed a collective sigh of relief! When Barry left the clubhouse, there was a large number of media people waiting for him, for apparently the word of his fall and injury had leaked out. They shoved their tape recorders and microphones in his face and asked him how he felt. Bonds stated " I just saw my chiropractor. I feel 100 percent better." Barry’s chiropractor was contacted by a liaison from the ACA, who asked if Barry would be willing to be interviewed so that the ACA could put the story on the newswires. He agreed without hesitation. During that interview, Barry observed: " I think it should be mandatory to see a chiropractor and massage therapist." The crew filmed Rod Beck (the Giants' all-time saves leader), Barry, and other players getting adjusted. During Barry's interview, he related how chiropractic adjustments helped clear up his sinuses. He also explained how the body gets out of balance, causing the hamstrings to get tight, and how getting adjusted helps him perform at his best. Jose Canseco, Ex-Bash Brother and former MLB All-Star
" I've found that it's a great stress reliever to get adjusted. It takes away a lot of the tightness in the muscles" Fred Funk, PGA Tour Professional
"I do believe chiropractic has really benefited my game. Over the last three years, I feel I have become more exposed to, and knowledgeable about, the benefits of chiropractic for me, and my game. I realize how your body can get out of balance, and chiropractic care helps....." Irving Fryar, former NFL wide-reciever "I definitely believe that chiropractic care has attributed to my fitness. I don't think I could maintain my level of play without chiropractic. When I go to Dr. Napoli for an adjustment I immediately feel better."
Lou Waters, CNN anchor
"I like to go to the chiropractor at least once a week and have for the past 20-25 years. I feel better when I go; I have more energy." |
